Suggestions for being a Graphic Designer
There are many Freelance websites;www.freelancer.ca and www.elance.com are ones that I frequently look at. They're very professional sites with plenty of jobs for any type of graphic designer. You could also Google "Freelance work" or "Freelance websites". A lot of this is trial and error and a lot of putting yourself out there. I use these sites to build my portfolio, they give great ideas for what other people would like and gives you specifications to work around.
Another fantastic way to build your portfolio and your skills is to work on tutorials, whether these are specific tutorials or broad topics they will both enhance your skills and make you a better graphic designer. You may feel that these tutorials are silly and aren't going to help you because they're specific, I know that's how I felt until recently. These are a few tips that helped me get through.
- Pick a few tutorials at a time
- Pick a specific skill that you'd want to work on in that tutorial
- Think about how that skill can be transferred
These next points I'll touch on briefly and go into more details later on
- Probably the most important thing is to work through the tutorials completely,
- Don't limit yourself
- Use the internet, make connections
When you find a tutorial that you like work through the whole thing , even if you don't understand or don't want to do part of it, doing the tutorial will make you a stronger Graphic designer. You will gain skills and learn much more by doing so. You can use these skills and certain parts of the tutorial to create a wonderful piece that's inspired by those tutorials but is all your own.
Being a graphic designer means a lot, you can do so much. The possibilities are endless; you can do icon design, flyers, brochures, photo editing, website design, fashion design, t shirt design, poster creation, advertising, business plans, creating resources for adobe programs; brushes, swatches, patterns, shapes, symbols, and more. Even if you find lots of work doing logos keep practicing other things, it will develop your skills in the programs and build a wider variety portfolio collection.
