Being a graphic designer

Suggestions for being a Graphic Designer

There are many Freelance websites;www.freelancer.ca and www.elance.com are ones that I frequently look at. They're very professional sites with plenty of jobs for any type of graphic designer. You could also Google "Freelance work" or "Freelance websites". A lot of this is trial and error and a lot of putting yourself out there. I use these sites to build my portfolio, they give great ideas for what other people would like and gives you specifications to work around.

Another fantastic way to build your portfolio and your skills is to work on tutorials, whether these are specific tutorials or broad topics they will both enhance your skills and make you a better graphic designer. You may feel that these tutorials are silly and aren't going to help you because they're specific, I know that's how I felt until recently. These are a few tips that helped me get through.
  1. Pick a few tutorials at a time
  2. Pick a specific skill that you'd want to work on in that tutorial
  3. Think about how that skill can be transferred
These next points I'll touch on briefly and go into more details later on
  1. Probably the most important thing is to work through the tutorials completely,
  2. Don't limit yourself
  3. Use the internet, make connections

When you find a tutorial that you like work through the whole thing , even if you don't understand or don't want to do part of it, doing the tutorial will make you a stronger Graphic designer. You will gain skills and learn much more by doing so. You can use these skills and certain parts of the tutorial to create a wonderful piece that's inspired by those tutorials but is all your own.

Being a graphic designer means a lot, you can do so much. The possibilities are endless; you can do icon design, flyers,  brochures, photo editing, website design, fashion design, t shirt design, poster creation, advertising, business plans, creating resources for adobe programs;  brushes, swatches, patterns, shapes, symbols, and more.  Even if you find lots of work doing logos keep practicing other things, it will develop your skills in the programs and build a wider variety portfolio collection.

Use any resource you can; the internet has plenty of sites for tutorials, connections and putting yourself out there. First try Pinterest or Google; search terms like "graphic design", "graphic design tutorials" , "illustrator tutorials" , "Photoshop tutorials". YouTube has lots of adobe tutorials, for these I recommend working through them start to finish.

Believe in yourself, don't let anyone tell you your work is no good without telling you how to improve it. Continue to find new inspirations, look at art from different countries, different art periods. Try things, when you try you will never fail. Any artwork you create will develop new skills and broaden your portfolio.

Inspirational post #5

Sometimes life gets you down.....and that's okay. Sometimes the people you care about most can let you down. They don't mean to but it happens. No one is perfect and we need to be able to understand where they're coming from and forgive them. Sometimes we need to be able to find something that'll pick us back up. Notice how i said something and not someone. There's a reason....we cant expect another person to pick us up. We can ask for help but its not fair to them to be the only thing to pick you up. Hobbies help get through a lot....keeping focused on something....keeping busy. When ur down you have two options. Stay in your routine and get worse or make a change and improve your life.

Society

Society is always telling us how to look, how to act, how to feel, who we are, who we aren't, what to think and who we should like. Its 2016 and society is still not accepting of all people. Schools still have bullies, we hate people for materialistic reasons. We cant accept people who are different than us. Is being hateful ingrained into us or is it taught. Nuture vs nature. Everyone tells their children how to behave and to be nice to others. However at school they're so exposed to everything and they end up following their friends. I think its time for everyone to take a stand. We could all benefit by being more positive. "The first thought that goes through your mind is what you have been conditioned to think; what you think next defines who you are." Challenge: tell others what you like about, them complement them when you admire some personality trait they have.
